The School of Art, Sport and Adventure

In the last while I’ve been taking a break from the Postpartum Doula life, which had left me very very sleep deprived after a few years of regular night shifts.  So for the past few months I’ve left behind the newest members of the planet and have been working with those who have been here for a few years now.

Particularly 3 redhead energetic jedi boys.

When we first started our time together, we decided that we should be a school in which the older dude would assist me in teaching his younger brothers.  After throwing a few names around we decided to call it the School of Art, Sport and Adventure.  Adventure we did.  Play sports we did, mostly soccer.  When we were coming up with the name it me that kind of added the Art in there, in hopes of bringing in a bit more creativity into the lives of these very sporty centered fellows.  Honestly, it didn’t take much.  Before I knew it the paints, markers and crayons were being pulled out and used daily, without my suggestion.

So last week when we realized that our time together was coming to an end, we decided that we wanted to end it with something special.  We thought we’d make an art show and showcase all that we’d done and invite family and friends.  Friday, our last day, I got it all organized and displayed around the house.  I wanted to make it a real art opening, to make them feel like they were as important as Emily Carr.  I wrote up an artists bio for each little artiste.  Each room was a gallery…the star wars gallery, cars & planes gallery, basketball hall gallery and the painting room. I glowed when we set up the flower photography that the 5 year old had taken with my point and shoot camera on a garden adventure (they were really good)!  The guests poured artistic praise over my little art pals, which has me hoping that they’ll always believe that they are artists.

There were a few tales of our creative adventures along the way which you can find here and here!

And here,  a wee glimpse into the first art opening of E, W & R.

1.  You.  Have I told you how lovely you are?  How supported I feel when you come here and say kind things?  How worried I was that I’d be all alone here after leaving my old blog and how humbled I am that you come back to visit.  I completely adore you!

2.  Film.  I got more film back from my trip to California and get even more swoony over its rich colors as each package of prints lands in my hands.  Deep love.  This week there has been lots of news about the end of the Kodachrome film.  This article in the Globe and Mail (one of Canada’s main papers) is especially exciting to me as its all about the experience of this film from the perspective of some family friends, Finn (an incredibly talented and award winning photographer) and Errill O’Hara.   Its such a gorgeous film and its still available in some places.  I definitely want to try and get my hands on a roll before they are all gone! Todays photojojo newsletter has more details on the film and where you can still find some!

3.  Music.  I’m super excited this week as a dear friend’s band The Cliks had their newest album come out this week.  I already have it in my lil’ hands and its pretty much in constant rotation on the stereo.  I’ve ranted many times about how proud I am of him and this new album brings that to another level.  Its incredible. What is especially exciting is that one track from their new album is itunes free single of the week (at least in Canada, I’m not too sure if it works for elsewhere) so if you felt tempted to check them out, you can get that song for free!  The link to their free single is down on the right side of the page.

Beauty

This is my dear sweet friend zinnia. also known as my muse. we’ve been doing photoshoots together since the days when i had a little point and shoot camera. sometimes the shoots are all me as the photographer and her as my subject, but quite regularly she turns the camera on me and helps me see my own beauty too.

we became friends a few years ago, at a time when i didn’t feel like my present shiny happy self, a time when i really didn’t feel like i was friend material. but she saw through my self-pessimism and we’ve been creative allies ever since, spending many the weekend day with canvases and art supplies making beautiful messes. we’ve got some grand plans for summer goodness including some big-kid-art-camp style plans and other photographic concepts that i’ll just have to save as a surprise.

since i became completely obsessed with this medium, she’s been keen to be a model for me as i’ve learned the ways of portrait photography. i love seeing how our model~photographer vibe has developed over the years (she’s all over my flickr portrait section) and i just think she’s one of the shiniest gems the world holds.

i’m going to be delivering a cd of images to her today, packed full of her gorgeousness, but thought i’d do a little saturday ode to a lovely friend and share some shots of our most recent shoot together.

recently i confessed to her that if someday i have a child of the female persuasion, that i’d want to name her zinnia. she’s just that lovely that she makes you wanna name your kid after her…
