Beloved Body Image Mentoring

Individualized Support in using the Camera as a Body Image Healing Tool

Do photos feel like an ally on your body acceptance journey? Or do you hide from them at all costs, feeling like they bring up old stories that you thought you’d let go of already.

The later is such a common experience, one people express to me nearly every day on social media. Yet, in these past 6 year of teaching the Be Your Own Beloved classes I’ve witnessed really profound changes in people’s relationships to their body happen through the camera.

The work of making peace with our body in images happens through the act of taking them. The place that feels like the wound in our self-image is actually the doorway.

And I’m honoured to get to do this work in the world, helping you open that door and giving you support as you walk through it.

Alongside the Be Your Own Beloved E-Courses and the Body Peace Program, for the past 3 years I’ve been offering photo and body image mentoring to support you in your journey of seeing yourself with compassion through your camera.

Throughout the sessions these past 3 years, there became three very clear themes that we’d dig into: Beginning (and beginning again), finding our reslience and shedding our shame, how visibility (and invisibility) play a role in our relationship to our body image and the changes that happen when we choose to be the narrator of our own story and create visibility on our own terms.

So I created these three types of mentoring sessions to meet your needs. Time for you and I to connect, one on one, to share your story and feel heard in your experience of your relationship to the camera. During these sessions, we dig into ways that you can shift your relationship to the camera in accessible yet proactive ways.

I’ve worked with over a thousand folks in the past 6 as they explore their relationship to the camera in the context of the Be Your Own Beloved classes and these past 3 years through individual mentoring but they haven’t been available to the general public, until now!

Body Compassion Mentoring Session & Starter Kit

When we’ve been rooted in self-critique for much of our lives, especially in our relationship to images it can be hard to know where to begin. That’s where using the tool of taking self-portraits can be incredibly powerful. It helps put our body compassion into action. It is because photos can feel like a place of self-critique that they can also feel like a place of healing, a place where we can cultivate a new compassionate conversation with ourselves.

This session focuses on supporting you in your individual path of beginning to see yourself with compassion through the lens. In the mentoring session we’ll dig into what might be holding you back from seeing yourself in photos, what old body stories have been in your way that you’re ready to let go of and help create a pathway forward that helps you become the narrator of your own visual story again.

I’ve brought together my favorite Be Your Own Beloved resources for starting this journey combined with a one-on-one mentoring session with me will help spark this path in a way that feels playful, accessible and possible.

Photo Resilience Mentoring

Are photos feeling like a roadblock on your body acceptance path? You’ve been working hard to make peace with food, to enjoy joyful movement. You’ve been doing a lot of self-compassion work, have been devouring books on making peace with your body. Yet photos feel like a missing link on this path, and you find yourself seeing images of yourself and feeling like those old stories still come up.

It’s such a common experience, because we think that the work that we’re doing in cultivating self-compassion is going to translate to our relationship to photo. Believe me, all that work you’ve doing will only help support you even more but of making peace with photos is something that we need to do through the lens, through our relationship to the camera.

And it’s not that you’re doing something wrong. It’s not your body in the photo that it the problem, it’s the reasons that we’ve been told to believe what we’re seeing is wrong. That is the problem.

What is the antidote for these moments where we struggle with photos? Resilience.

Becoming more resilience, having tools to help us rise up again. Knowing what we want to say to the person in the photo when we’re struggling to see them with compassion. I’ve been focusing a lot of my work on what I call Photo Resilience and have cultivated tools to help you feel more resilient in photos and bounce back from these moments.

I’ve found that our photo resilience needs to be heard, to be held. The reason that we feel tender about photos start to lose it’s power the more we speak it aloud and these sessions are designed to help your story feel heard and then to help cultivate resilience tools that reflect your path.

In this session I will help you begin to:

  • Give voice to the ways that photos have felt like a roadblock on your self-compassion path and to begin to see how the camera can be our ally, not our enemy.
  • Prioritize your own voice over external perceptions and worries of what other people might think.
  • Call out the types of oppressive forces that are clouding your self-perception, calling out the ways that fatphobia, sexism, racism, ageism, ableism and unrealistic body standards.
  • Gather tools to feel more resilient in photos.

This session might be for you if you:

  • Are feeling like photos are a roadblock in your body acceptance path and would like individualized tools and support around how to bounce back and find resilience in moments like this.
  • Want to reclaim your power back from your inner critic in response to photos
  • Are missing from the visual story of your own life because photos feel too vulnerable to be in and you’re ready to change that relationship

You receive:

  • A 60 minute Skype mentoring call where we’ll dig into these issues
  • The Photo Resilience E-Book to get started
  • A 20 minute Skype follow up call
  • A follow-up resource email with some of the resilience tools we talked about on the calls and an activity to try.

Where and How:

Mentoring Sessions take place online via Skype at a date and time of your choice (or if you are local to Vancouver, it is an option to do the session in person).

Empowered Visibility Mentoring

A lot of the feelings that come up stepping into the lens are rooted in our relationship to visibility. I’ve been cultivating a body of work around Empowered Visibility, stepping into being visible in our own lives, on our own terms. What I’ve witnessed in teaching this work is that when we step into our own empowered visibility, transformation happens in our lives as a whole. Ripples are created when we choose to explore stepping out of our cloak of invisibility or root into our visibility, on our own terms. The empowered visibility mentoring session will help you wake up to the ways that invisibility has been your comfort zone and the callings you have to be visible in your own life. It is an action based mentoring session so after I’ll call I’ll send you an activity to explore unique to your own experience.

Changes happen when we step into our Empowered Visibility. I’m looking forward to helping you spark that change.

This session might be for you if you:

  • Are feeling like you don’t recognize the person looking back at you in your photos and want to reconnect
  • Have felt either invisible much of your life OR on the opposite end of the spectrum have struggled with how visible you feel in your life and want to establish a grounded relationship to visibility
  • Want to be more visible in your life or business, maybe you have an Instagram account but only post memes from others or post your own images but are completely absent from them, but aren’t sure how to make that change?
  • Are feeling like you’re at a transitional stage in your life and are wanting to move forward
  • Feel invisible in your life and want to change that

You’ll receive:

  • A 60 minute Skype mentoring call where we’ll dig into these issues
  • A follow-up resource email with some of the ideas we explored
  • A bonus free E-Book from my work suited to your needs
  • A 20 minute follow-up Skype session at a time of your choice to explore how you’ve expanded into your visibility.

Where and How:

Mentoring Sessions take place online via Skype at a date and time of your choice (or if you are local to Vancouver, it is an option to do the session in person).

FAQ

Are you still offering mentoring alongside the E-Courses?

Yes, absolutely. Doing a mentoring session alongside the class is a powerful combo because it gives a place for the discoveries and discomforts (which is part of creating change of course) of this work to have a place to land. The price point may  (as I’ve been offering the Be Your Own Beloved companion mentoring at a much-reduced price) but at the moment it is remaining the same. If that feels like the option for you, there is a session of Be Your Own Beloved session happening this September and you are welcome to book your session before or during the class.

Can we do the mentoring session in person?

If you’re going to be in Vancouver or live here and would like to do the mentoring session in-person, send me a message via the contact form. I’m most definitely open to that and connect with me via the contact form when you book your and we’ll make a plan for meeting in person instead.
