Photo Session ~ Maleea Acker

Maleea Acker

Last week I had a fabulous photo session with the poet, author and environmentalist Maleea Acker.

I’ve mentioned Maleea before on my blog, when I visited her home last summer. Her Meadow caused controversy in her neighbourhood in Victoria, BC when she turned her own yard into a beautiful Garry Oak Meadow.  Her brand new book  Gardens Aflame shares the story and importance of the Garry Oak.

Here’s a glimpse of our beachside photo session and I hope you take a moment to click on some of the above links and learn more about her work!

Photo Session ~ Andrea Paterson

On a rainy day day in January I gathered with the fabulous photographer, musician and artist, Andrea Paterson.   We met at the beautiful Bloedel Conservatory to add some lush spring like energy to this photo session on a not so spring like day.  Andrea’s husband Malcolm joined in too for the session as we captured this couple approaching the birth of their first child.

Biggest congrats to Andrea and Malcolm as their little man is now here!  It was a total pleasure photographing Andrea and I so wish them well in their new adventures as parents.

California Getaway

I’m presently sitting in the San Francisco Airport watching the sun rise through the fog.

It is bright and determined and radiant.

I’ve been away for a week and what a week it has been.

In planning for this trip, we changed the date a number of times, so when it came down to departing, I was really just caught up in what I needed to do to get ready.  So I really  had no expectations of a trip.  I knew I would have fun, but I didn’t know how much the sunshine would lift my spirits and how much I needed to get away from city life for a few days.

This trip was mainly about hanging out with my pals Valerie and Elke and the 3 of us (originally 4…we missed you Elizabeth) just having some restful retreat time.

We rented a place in Stinson Beach for a few days and just settled in.  We walked along the lagoon, cooked from scratch and ate oh so well.  We had appitizers and wine each night as we sat by the fire.  We hiked in Point Reyes Park and had a picnic.  We had a beautiful mix of solo and together time and each did what we needed to at any point.  It was a low pressure, wonderful trip.  Looking back on photos after we got back, it was oh so noticeable how happy we all looked. Wide and true smiles.

And the sun, oh she shone.

The Douglass Family

the douglass family

This is absolutely one of my favourite families to photograph.  Well, I’m also biased because this is my family. This is my sister, her husband and my amazing nephew.

This past weekend we were all out on the Oregon Coast and I went for a hike with the 3 of them with my camera and came back with some pretty fabulous memories documented.  I will also always remember this walk as the time we discovered that my nephew can smile on command.  Of course I’d rather seek out that natural giggly smile of his, but it was also super sweet to see him pull out his little model-dude self!

Beauty

This is my dear sweet friend zinnia. also known as my muse. we’ve been doing photoshoots together since the days when i had a little point and shoot camera. sometimes the shoots are all me as the photographer and her as my subject, but quite regularly she turns the camera on me and helps me see my own beauty too.

we became friends a few years ago, at a time when i didn’t feel like my present shiny happy self, a time when i really didn’t feel like i was friend material. but she saw through my self-pessimism and we’ve been creative allies ever since, spending many the weekend day with canvases and art supplies making beautiful messes. we’ve got some grand plans for summer goodness including some big-kid-art-camp style plans and other photographic concepts that i’ll just have to save as a surprise.

since i became completely obsessed with this medium, she’s been keen to be a model for me as i’ve learned the ways of portrait photography. i love seeing how our model~photographer vibe has developed over the years (she’s all over my flickr portrait section) and i just think she’s one of the shiniest gems the world holds.

i’m going to be delivering a cd of images to her today, packed full of her gorgeousness, but thought i’d do a little saturday ode to a lovely friend and share some shots of our most recent shoot together.

recently i confessed to her that if someday i have a child of the female persuasion, that i’d want to name her zinnia. she’s just that lovely that she makes you wanna name your kid after her…
