Befriending our Reflection

reflectionoption2

The camera and the mirror. For many of us those two go hand in hand as places of vulnerability, places where we come literally face to face with our self-critique. But it is because of this that it can also be a place to invite in a practice of self-compassion and invite in a change in our relationship to our self-image.

In this 15 day class we’re exploring making peace with ourselves in the mirror as a part of our Body Peace self-portraiture journey.

Especially because combining the mirror with selfies can’t help but be extra vulnerable, we’re slowly easing into the mirror though these playful and creative activities and meeting the person awaiting us there with compassion more and more each day throughout this program.

Because as we’re finding though exploring self-portraiture, the more we connect with ourselves there, the more we seek a friend looking back at us, the more comfortable we get with ourselves.

Yet the more we hide from the mirror or the camera, the more we fear what we might find there.

But what does await us there is…ourselves. It might not be the self we imagine our future self to be. It might not be the self we saw 10 years ago as our body is changing. But it is us, here and now, and we ALL have the potential to see that person looking back at us with compassion (and remember, compassion doesn’t mean we don’t have tough days or struggle with it), but it does mean that we are engaging with this relationship rather than disconnecting with it and are willing to see what awaits us there.

So let’s go on a playful and inquisitive journey to get on the same team with the person looking back at us in the mirror, to invite the mirror to be a place where we can cultivate a compassion practice and explore being our own beloved.

What You’ll Need:

  • A Portable Mirror
    • It could be a small portable mirror you have for travel adventures or a vintage hand held mirror or even one that is on your wall that you could take off the wall and bring outside or to another spot of your choice.
  • A Mirror just for You
    • This could be the same one as above or another mirror. Maybe it’s one you can fold up and put in your bag, or a compact mirror. Or maybe it’s a non-portrable mirror in your home that is in your home that is in a space that feels like it’s just for you.
  • Something to write a Note With or On
    • In one activity we will be leaving ourselves a note on the mirror. You could use some post it notes and a pen for this. Or maybe a piece of paper plus tape that you can attach to the mirror. Or you might grab your acrylic paints or a washable marker.
